Beckfoot Trust is an organisation that links a group of local Bradford schools together so that they can collectively improve the life chances for young people within their schools. Our aim is to create a group of truly remarkable schools each with a genuine comprehensive intake. They will be wonderful places for young people to learn and grow up in. We want to make a difference. We want to create something special.

Phonics and Early Reading

At Beckfoot Allerton, we use the Read, Write, Inc scheme to teach synthetic phonics. Children in EYFS and KS1 (and KS2 where required) are taught daily phonics in homogenous groups, briskly working through phonemes in order to read and graphemes in order to spell.

Children revisit the sounds they have learnt throughout the day and read wherever and whenever possible. Teachers and adults share quality texts and stories every day to promote a love of reading.

We have catch up tutors who use the Read, Write Inc. tutoring programme to work with children at risk of falling behind.

Our home reading books include a copy of the text being read in Read, Write, Inc. as well as a ‘bookbag’ book linked to theme of the text. Children can additionally borrow books from the EYFS and KS1 library. Each week, a child from each class is chosen to take home the reading suitcase which features a teddy, a superb bedtime book and a little book to write comments in.

We host regular workshops for parents and more information for using Read, Write, Inc. at home can be found here: https://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/parents-copy-2/
